Brief description
These scholarships are given out on the basis of both merit and need. Every year, the University of British Columbia awards fifty scholarships. The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, the International Impact Award, and the Vantage One Excellence Award are all part of the scholarship.
Awards are based on need, with the university dedicating approximately $10 million CAD a year to the fifty recipients in the program. Recipients also gain access to unique learning opportunities, annual retreats, dedicated advisors, and more. To qualify for this scholarship, you must be an international student on a Canadian study permit entering the University of British Colombia from a recognized secondary school or transferring from your first year at another college or university.
You must have graduated from high school by June 2021 and be seeking your first undergraduate degree. You must also demonstrate financial necessity that would otherwise preclude you from obtaining a degree at UBC. When you receive this fellowship, you will join a community of exceptional minds who enrich UBC via their unique viewpoints, involvement, and creativity.
Because the University of British Columbia is one of the top 40 universities in the world and North America’s most international, you will have numerous opportunities to grow, network, research, and innovate among other supportive scholars. In addition to all of this, the university provides a variety of possibilities both inside and outside the classroom, such as undergraduate research, co-ops, clubs, and so on, to enable you contribute to the institution’s thriving community.
There are two scholarships.
International Major Entrance Scholarship
International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are awarded to outstanding international students pursuing undergraduate programs at UBC. Beneficiaries of this scholarship receive their IMES when entering their first year at UBC, and the scholarships can be renewed for up to three additional years of study. The number and level of these scholarships awarded each year is dependent on available funding.
Outstanding International Student Award
The Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship awarded to qualified students when they are offered admission to UBC. Students selected for this award show academic strength and display extra-curricular involvement outside of the classroom.
